Poas
National Park is a national park with more visitors to Costa Rica.
Because of its proximity is a popular destination for San Jose. Many
tourists visit the volcano during their first or last day in Costa Rica.
The
road passes through coffee plantations and small rustic restaurants.
The park covers an area of 5600 hectares, the road to the crater is 300
meters and is wheelchair accessible.
The
viewpoint is located at an altitude of 2700 meters. Below is a crater
depth of 320 meters and a diameter of 1.5 km. For its diameter is one of
the largest craters in the world and the largest in Costa Rica.
Basically,
a blue-green lagoon, rich in sulfur and acids. Sulfur smoke leaves
several cracks located in the crater. It is advisable to visit the park
in the morning, visibility is often better at this time.
An
additional attraction is the lake at Laguna Botos. On the trail of
biodiversity functionality, high cloud forest, you can watch the
hummingbirds and yigüiro, national bird of Costa Rica. There are birds
the most exotic and colorful in Costa Rica, but is very common in the
country.
Near the parking area is the information center with a model of the Poas Volcano. Major past eruptions were in 1910 and 1974. There are trails where you can see the variety of plants and wildlife.
When the volcano more active than normal, the National Park is temporarily closed. This happened in 1989, 1994 and 2007.
